Handyman in Palm Jumeirah — The Fronds

The villa type makes a huge difference here. A 3,500 sq ft Garden Home on Frond C has totally different issues than a 12,000 sq ft Signature Villa on Frond A. The Garden Homes use thinner internal walls — they're concrete block but only 100mm thick in some spots. I've done 83 TV mounts in Garden Homes, and about 1 in 5 needed a cavity fixing because the block was hollow. The Signature Villas have solid walls, but they're 15 years old now, and the grout in the bathrooms is crumbling. I re-grouted a shower in a Signature Villa on Frond D last month — it took 3 hours because the old grout was so deep I had to chisel it out. Another thing: the outdoor AC units are Carrier or York originally. After 15 years, the condenser fins are full of salt corrosion. If your tenant says the AC's not cooling, it's often just the fins blocked with salt. I clean them with a special coil cleaner — costs AED 87 a can. But it's cheaper than a new unit.

For a handyman job on the Fronds, I charge AED 150 an hour. That's my standard rate. But I'm honest with you — if you need corrosion-resistant fixings for outdoor work, that's extra. A box of 50 marine-grade screws costs me AED 65, and I pass that on. Expect a minimum of 2 hours for most jobs. A TV mount takes about 47 minutes if the wall's solid, but if I hit a hollow block or need to reroute cables, it's closer to 2.5 hours. I don't do emergency callouts — I book 3-5 days ahead usually. Summer months (June to September) are quieter, so you might get a slot in 2 days. But I don't work after 5pm on the Fronds because the access rules at some gates (like Frond E) require a security pass that's only valid until 6pm. I can't guarantee same-day. If your curtain rod falls down at 8pm, you'll have to wait until the next morning. I've been doing this since 2013, so I know the shortcuts through the Palm — it takes me exactly 25 minutes from my workshop in Al Quoz to Frond B, no matter the traffic.
