Handyman vs Specialist: When to Call Which for Dubai Home Repairs

Hiring a specialist electrician to hang a picture is wasteful. Having a handyman fix your distribution board is dangerous. Here is how to decide, job by job.

The line between what a skilled handyman can handle and what requires a licensed specialist is clearer than most people think, but it is not intuitive. The rule is simple: any work that involves a system that requires licensing in Dubai — electrical circuits, plumbing supply lines, air conditioning refrigerant, structural alterations — requires the relevant specialist. Everything else falls within a handyman's scope. Getting this right saves you money on the small jobs and keeps you safe on the big ones.

When a Handyman Is the Right Call

TV wall mounting, furniture assembly, curtain rod and blind installation, picture and mirror hanging, shelf installation, minor carpentry (adjusting a sticking door, repairing a drawer runner), replacing a tap washer, unblocking a sink trap, replacing a light bulb or light fitting on an existing connection, silicone sealant replacement around a bath or sink, assembling flat-pack furniture, installing a ceiling fan on an existing electrical connection, mounting a bathroom accessory (towel rail, toilet roll holder). Handyman rates in Dubai are AED 120 to 150 per hour with a 2-hour minimum, meaning most small jobs cost AED 240 to 300 — significantly less than calling a specialist tradesman who charges a minimum call-out of AED 150 to 200 plus hourly rates. A handyman can typically complete 4 to 6 small jobs in a half-day session at a total cost of AED 400 to 500.

When You Need a Licensed Specialist

Any work inside the distribution board — replacing an MCB, investigating a tripping circuit, upgrading a breaker. Any work involving new wiring or extending an existing circuit. Any plumbing work involving supply pipes under pressure — a handyman can change a tap washer but should not cut into a pressurised water line. AC repair beyond filter cleaning — refrigerant handling requires certification. Gas appliance connection — this legally requires a licensed gas engineer. Structural alterations — removing walls, creating openings, modifying load-bearing elements. Waterproofing — applying a bathroom or roof membrane requires specialised knowledge and materials. The cost of getting this wrong is not just a poor-quality job; it is a safety risk or a compliance issue that may affect your insurance or your ability to sell the property.
