Dubai's AC repair market is unregulated for pricing, which means quotes for identical work can vary by 200–300% between companies. This guide gives you a clear picture of what things should cost so you can spot an overcharge before the work starts — and understand why a suspiciously low quote should be as much of a warning sign as an obviously high one.
Standard Annual Service Visit
Typical cost: AED 150–200 per indoor unit
A standard annual service visit should include: cleaning the filter, cleaning the evaporator coil (indoor unit), checking the condensate drain and clearing if blocked, checking refrigerant pressure, and running a test cycle. For split AC units, the outdoor unit condenser coil should also be cleaned — this is often skipped by cheaper providers and is arguably the more important of the two coils in Dubai's dusty environment.
Be wary of quotes under AED 100 per unit — at that price, a technician can afford to spend about 15 minutes per unit, which is not enough time to do a proper coil clean.
Gas Recharge (Refrigerant Top-Up)
Typical cost: AED 200–350 per unit (R-410A refrigerant)
This is one of the most commonly inflated charges in Dubai AC repair. The actual cost of R-410A refrigerant has come down significantly, and a recharge on a standard 1.5–2 tonne split unit should not cost more than AED 300–350 unless the system has a significant leak requiring a large quantity of gas.
Important: a reputable technician will check for a refrigerant leak before recharging. Topping up a leaking system is a waste of your money — it will need recharging again within 6–12 months. The leak trace and seal should be included in or added to the recharge quote, not avoided.
Capacitor Replacement
Typical cost: AED 150–300 including parts and labour
Capacitors are the component most commonly killed by Dubai's high summer temperatures — they typically last 5–8 years before failing. A failed start capacitor is often the reason an outdoor unit hums but doesn't start, or why the fan runs but the compressor doesn't kick in. The part itself costs AED 30–80; the remainder is labour. Be cautious of technicians quoting AED 500+ for a capacitor replacement without a detailed explanation.
PCB / Control Board Replacement
Typical cost: AED 400–1,200 depending on brand and model
PCB (printed circuit board) failures are more common in older units and in units that have experienced power surges. Genuine OEM boards are more expensive than generic equivalents but more reliable. If you're told a PCB needs replacing on a unit under 5 years old, it's worth asking for a second opinion — PCBs rarely fail on newer units and are sometimes misdiagnosed.
Compressor Replacement
Typical cost: AED 800–2,500 depending on unit size and brand
Compressor replacement is a major repair. For units under 5 years old and out of warranty, it's usually worth doing. For units over 10 years old, compare the repair cost against a new unit of equivalent capacity — if the repair exceeds 50% of the new unit price, replacement is often the wiser financial decision, particularly given the energy efficiency improvements in newer inverter models.
Full AC Unit Replacement (Supply and Install)
Typical cost: AED 1,500–2,500 (1.5 tonne), AED 2,500–4,500 (2.5 tonne)
This includes the unit, installation labour, copper pipe and electrical connections, and disposal of the old unit. Prices vary significantly by brand — budget brands (Nikai, Zamil) sit at the lower end; mid-range (Gree, Midea, Samsung) in the middle; premium (Daikin, Mitsubishi, Carrier) at the top. We always recommend mid-range or above for Dubai use given the extended running hours compared to temperate climates.
Red Flags to Watch For
- Refusing to quote before work starts. Any reputable company gives you a fixed price before touching anything.
- Vague invoices. "Repair works" with no line-item breakdown is a sign that pricing is being invented post-hoc.
- Gas recharge without a leak check. If refrigerant was low, something let it out. Not checking for the leak is negligent.
- Pressure to replace the compressor on a unit under 5 years old. Get a second opinion.
AMC (Annual Maintenance Contract)
If you have 3+ AC units in a villa or apartment, an AMC is almost always better value than paying per-visit. A typical Dubai villa AMC covering 4–6 units with two services per year and emergency callouts included costs AED 800–1,500 annually — equivalent to 1–2 service visits if priced individually, but including unlimited emergency labour.
