Salt Water vs Chlorine Pool: Which Is Better for Dubai?

Most Dubai villa pools are salt water, but that does not mean salt is always the right choice. Here is an honest comparison based on maintaining both types across the emirate since 2013.

If you are building a new pool or your chlorinator has failed and you are deciding between salt and traditional chlorine, you are asking one of the most common questions we hear. The honest answer: both systems work well in Dubai, both have specific weaknesses in our climate, and the right choice depends more on your usage pattern and maintenance expectations than on any inherent superiority.

How Each System Works

Salt water pools have roughly one-tenth the salinity of the ocean. A salt chlorinator cell passes an electric current through the water, producing chlorine continuously on-site. Traditional chlorine pools require manual addition of chlorine — liquid, granules, or tablets — which must be monitored and replenished regularly as it degrades in sunlight.

Cost Comparison

Salt system equipment costs AED 2,000 to 4,500 installed. Annual running cost is approximately AED 600 to 1,500 — cheaper to run year after year. Traditional chlorine has lower upfront equipment cost but higher annual chemical cost of AED 2,000 to 4,000. The salt system pays back within 2 to 3 years, then saves money every year after.

What Works Better in Dubai Specifically

Salt systems produce chlorine continuously, maintaining steadier levels through intense UV days. For villa owners who travel in summer, a salt system continues producing chlorine in your absence — many green pools we are called to in August belong to owners who returned from holiday to find their manually dosed pool had been without chlorine for two weeks. The trade-off: salt cells require diligent cleaning every 3 months in Dubai's hard water. If you are not keeping up with the cleaning schedule, traditional chlorine with reliable service is the safer option.
