Some companies recommend one at every annual visit — which is either incompetence or an easy revenue opportunity, because each acid wash removes 0.5 to 1mm of plaster. After 4 to 6 washes, re-plastering at AED 8,000 to 15,000 becomes necessary. Other owners avoid acid washing entirely, letting scale and stains build until the pool surfaces are rough and uncomfortable. The truth sits in between.
When an Acid Wash Is Actually Necessary
It is warranted when: the pool has been green for an extended period and algae staining persists after chemical treatment; calcium scale has built up to where the surface feels like sandpaper; metal staining has penetrated the plaster; or the pool is being prepared for sale or rental listing photos. It is NOT warranted when: the pool is simply dirty (brush and vacuum), the water is cloudy (fix filtration, not plaster), or a company recommends it as part of annual maintenance (too frequent).
What It Costs
A standard villa pool acid wash in Dubai costs AED 1,500 to 3,000 including labour, chemicals, neutralisation, and refill water. The process takes 2 to 3 days: drain, acid application section by section, pressure wash, neutralise with soda ash, refill, and rebalance the fresh water. The water itself costs only AED 30 to 50 from DEWA — the cost is in the labour.
Red Flags
A technician who cannot explain what specifically needs to be removed. Annual acid wash recommendations in Dubai conditions (normal is 2 to 3 years). Cannot tell you the acid concentration they use. Does not mention neutralisation — acid residue left in the pool will continue etching after refill. Does not warn you about plaster thinning — a technician who recommends repeated acid washes without explaining the cumulative effect is prioritising short-term revenue over your pool's long-term condition.
